Mzansi Magic premieres maskandi drama uZulu no Mhlaba, the latest riveting Sunday night series

They say Sundays are for lovers, but we all know that on Mzansi Magic Sunday nights are for drama. The channel’s primetime slot is loved by viewers for its ground-breaking and riveting shows, and the latest addition is a brand-new show titled uZulu no Mhlaba.

Partially set and filmed in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal’s Ulundi township, the 13-episode drama uZulu no Mhlaba premieres on Sunday 30 October at 20h00. It tells the story of two maskandi artists who engage in a brutal feud over music – only to discover they are more closely linked than they could have imagined…zindala zombili.

The artists are portrayed by newcomers Aphiwe Bengu (who plays Zulu) and Ntokozo Vilakazi who plays Mhlaba). The impressive cast also includes the legendary Ernest Ndlovu (iNkabaBlack Sails); Ayanda Borotho (Isibaya); the award-winning Nothando Ngcobo; Phumzile Mlangeni (GomoraThe QueenThe Republic); and award-winning maskandi icon Ihhashi Elimhlophe.

uZulu no Mhlaba explores two generations of maskandi musicians: fathers and their sons, and each generation’s musical (and deeply personal) rivalry. Having come from very different backgrounds but with a shared passion for maskandi music, Zulu and Mhlaba turn into bitter rivals when they inherit a feud held by their respective fathers.

They learn a secret long hidden from them when an unspeakable tragedy occurs – what impact will this have on the world around them, their loved ones… and each other?

uZulu no Mhlaba is the story of music and rivalry, and what human beings will do when faced with life-changing moments that need them to confront their deepest fears to overcome them.

“Our Sunday night drama slot has traditionally been one of our strongest performers and we are committed to always attain this target. It’s a primetime slot known for Mzansi Magic’s celebrated dramas, and we’re proud to add a brand-new show to this slot, one set in the world of one of the country’s largest music genres. We always try and push the envelope with our content, and we are excited to see how it performs, and if the viewers will resonate with it,” says Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.

Tune in to uZulu no Mhlaba, the latest unmissable drama on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161), premiering on Sunday 30 October at 20h00. Don’t forget to follow @Mzansimagic to keep up to date with the latest news from your favourite shows.
